Buttons

Buttons are useful little embellishments by themselves. They are simple, colourful and relatively cheap. When added to a layout they can give a little dimension without overly bulking a page.

They have an important place in the scrapbooking world. Manufacturers continue to include these embellishments in their product ranges and hence are continually renewing their popularity.

Suppliers

There are some great ranges around. Firstly, the Making Memories Kids have been made to co-ordinate with their Kids line. These come in fun shapes of fish, hearts, flowers, stars and the traditional circles and squares. Bazzill Basics offers their Really BIG range, available in two sizes, 6cm and 4.5cm and in five colours. These big ones can become a blank canvas waiting for further decorating. American Crafts and s.e.i are two manufacturers who have released them in simple shapes but vibrant colours to match their paper ranges, making it easy to match the right coloured version to our layouts.

Customising

If you can’t find the perfect example for your project, there are a few ways of customizing them. Rub-on transfers are available in many motif designs, and can be applied to the surface, even if it is slightly rounded. They can be stamped with rubber stamps and StazOn ink. The surface to be stamped needs to be flat, so check both sides, quite often the under side is flat and suitable for stamping. If you are using clear ones, cut pieces of pattern paper the same size, and lay underneath. The clear ones will take on the design of the paper, making this another useful method for coordinating them with a layout.

Attaching them

There are a few methods for attaching to a project. Sewing them to a layout can give a handmade look. Glue dots applied to the back are a strong adhesive. New Long Bradz from Junkitz have extra long thin pins which fit through the holes. The pins of the brads a long enough to fit the button, cardstock and still have enough length to split at the back of the project.
