Scrapbooking companies produce tags that coordinate with their ranges of papers and other embellishments, making it easy to choose the right one for our projects. Usually all we need to add to them is our title, journaling or a couple of little embellishments or stickers, and they are ready to be attached to our layouts. Choose a method of attachment that suits the theme of your layout. Popular choices at the moment are the beaded chains, jump rings, ribbons and fibres and embroidery threads twisted together.

Attaching

Try a different method of attaching your journaling onto your layout. Rather than typing your journaling in one block of text, divide it up, say into paragraphs, and print it in smaller pieces of text. One way to do this is to type your journaling into a table format in your word processor. Type each paragraph into a different cell of the table, centering the text if you wish, and then removing the lines from the table. When you print this ‘table’, you will have small blocks of text ready to be cut out in the shape of tags. If you are not confident to cut them freehand, use one of the many templates which are available on the market today. The work area in your local scrapbooking store may even have some templates available for your use during crops.

Inspiration

The types used for commercial purposes (by that I mean prices, clothing labels, etc) can be used as inspiration for our scrapbooking projects. Next time you are out shopping for them, take note of what attracted your eye – was it the shape, the colour, the material (I like the clear plastic ones some companies use), the way it was attached (a chain, string, plastic), or the way the company title and logo were designed and printed? Use all these ideas as inspiration next time you are creating your own at home. Also, keep them from your purchases if you like them, and use them as templates for your future projects.

At the hardware

One last place to pick up some tag ideas is the hardware. Kitchen laminate chips make wonderful tags. Add some rub-on words and dangle with a bead chain on your layout. (Use laminate chips with some caution, as some materials used in their manufacture may not be safe to put with your photos.) Also paint colour cards can make bright additions to your work. Punch a hole through the top and attach with some string or ribbon. There should be a colour to suit your layout.
